Profile

Belmont lies south of the Swan River and north-east of Orrong Road . In its centre lies Perth Airport and the Kewdale Freight Terminal . In the east it includes South Guilford and High Wycombe , though most of the electorate lies south of the Airport, including the suburbs of Rivervale , Belmont , Cloverdale , Redcliffe , Kewdale and Weishpool . The electorate's area is 65 km&2.


History

Belmont was created by the redistribution ahead of the 1989 election, having previously existed as an electorate between 1962 and 1974 . In the interregnum, the local electorate was named Ascot, both electorate names commemorating Perth's local racecourses. Always a Labor Party seat, Belmont was one of the four seats held by Col Jamieson during his long career in state politics between 1953 and 1986 .
