is a
Fictional Character on the
ABC television series ''
Lost '' played by
Mira Furlan . She is a recurring on-island character who has appeared periodically throughout seasons one through three. She is named after French-Swiss philosopher
Jean-Jacques Rousseau .
According to Danielle's descriptions: When she and her crew shipwrecked on their route from ." She had been on the island for sixteen years when the survivors arrived. It was said that Danielle will be having a flashback to show the story of her research ship in either the fourth, fifth, or sixth season, as well as show up in someone else's flashback.
Rousseau's first appeared in "
Solitary " (though her voice had been heard in the second part of the pilot, as part of the distress signal), having captured
Sayid , who had left camp to explore. Having grown paranoid over the sixteen years, she tortures him with electricity until he is able to convince her who he is, and that he is not one of the Others. After initially refusing to let him go (having grown lonely), she finally does so, warning him to watch the other survivors carefully.
Flashbacks in "
Maternity Leave " revealed that Rousseau had found a destitute
Claire in the jungle. The Others were approaching her, and Claire was calling out to them; however, to protect her, Rousseau hit her with the butt of her rifle and brought her back to camp.
She reappears in "
Numbers " when
Hurley finds the numbers written on some of the documents Sayid had taken from her bunker. She shoots at him, but when she stops, Hurley asks her what the numbers mean. She agrees that they are cursed, as they had brought both of them to the island.
In "," Rousseau warns the survivors that the others are coming, and proceeds to lead
Jack ,
Kate ,
Locke , Hurley, and Dr. Arzt to the Black Rock, an abandoned slave ship that contained dynamite she had used for her own bunkers. After reaching the ship, she returned, only to steal the newborn son of
Claire in hopes of trading him for her own Alex that had been taken 16 years earlier. After Sayid and
Charlie negotiated with her, she gave the baby back.
Sayid then sees Rousseau in "
One Of Them " having captured a man who claimed his name was "Henry Gale," whom she thought to be one of the Others (it would later be revealed that his real name was
Ben Linus , that he was one of the Others, and that he had been raising Alex as his own daughter) . After he attempted to escape, Rousseau shot him in the back with an arrow, not intending to kill him. Henry was then taken in by Sayid to be questioned.
In "Maternity Leave," Claire begins to get her memory back, and she approaches Rousseau with Kate to return to the bunker of her memories. She leads Claire and Kate to the place where she had found her, and Claire finds the Staff medical station. Claire, who is unable to find medicine that she had been looking for, angrily asks Rousseau where the medicine is, but she regains the memory of Rousseau saving her. The three women return to the survivors' camp; however, Claire tells Rousseau that a teenage girl had helped her escape, a girl who is later revealed to be Alex.
At the end of "
Tricia Tanaka Is Dead ," Kate finds Rousseau, and tells her that a girl who she believes to be Alex had helped her escape when she was imprisoned by the Others; however, Kate wants her knowledge of the island, thus she leads Kate, Sayid, and Locke to where the Others' camp is located.
On their expedition, Locke, Sayid, Kate, and Rousseau find the Flame station in "
Enter 77 ," but she says that she does not wish to go with them inside because she does not wish to encounter one of the Others. She is seen with the survivors and Mikhail Bakunin, the resident of the Flame, at the end of the episode.
In the episode
Par Avion Kate asks Rousseau why she never asks questions about Alex, Rousseau tells her that she does not want to know, as Alex probably does not even know who she is and will not remember her.
Rousseau was tracking the others with Kate, Sayid and Locke; she was separated from them and was the only one not to be captured. She is later seen staring upon Alex as Alex helps Locke find the submarine in
The Man From Tallahassee .
Rousseau previously witnesses Mikhail's apparent death when Locke pushes him through the Others' security system; Mikhail is the only member of the others to know that Danielle was among Sayid, Locke and Kate but, as of yet, has not reported this to the others.
While Locke and Sawyer were in the Black Rock during the episode "
The Brig ", Rousseau appeared searching for some of the ship's dynamite to use. She departs with a full wooden case of the explosive, without stating her reasons for taking it. It was later revealed in "
Greatest Hits " that the dynamite Danielle was removing from the Black Rock was for a retaliation against the
Others during the attack that the others have been planning on the camp.
In the Season 3 finale, "
Through The Looking Glass ", Rousseau leads the castaways (and Juliet and Karl) to the radio tower. On their way there, they encounter Ben and Alex. After Jack beats him up, he reveals to Alex that Danielle is her mother, and Danielle is finally reunited with her daughter. She later turns off her distress call that has been playing for sixteen years.
It has been said that she may receive a flashback in the fourth season, or which may be put off until the fifth season.
