''Cyborg 009'' (サイボーグ009 ''Saibōgu Zero-Zero-Nain'') is a Manga created by Shotaro Ishinomori . It was serialized in many different Magazines , including '' Monthly Shōnen King '', '' Weekly Shonen Magazine '', '' Monthly Shonen Jump '', '' COM '', '' Weekly Shōnen Sunday '', '' Weekly Shōnen Big Comic '', '' SF Animedia '', and '' Shōjo Comic '' in Japan . The manga was published in English by TOKYOPOP ; as of 2006 it is out of print.

It is the tale of nine regular humans kidnapped by the evil Black Ghost organization to undergo human experiments. The result of this tampering are nine cyborgs, each one having super human powers. The nine cyborgs band together to fight for their freedom and to stop Black Ghost. The evil organization's goal is to start the next world war, by supplying any rich buyers with their choice of countless weapons of war and mass destruction.

Elements of this series would later find their way into '' Kamen Rider '' (1971), another famous creation by Ishinomori. The plots are the same, except that the weekly threats are mutants, and there is just one hero (later two), as opposed to nine.

CHARACTERS

Protagonists

00 Cyborgs

Ivan is a baby originally from Russia , born with a severe illness. His father Gamo (a famous brain surgeon who went mad after searching for a cure), performed numerous brain enhancement processes on Ivan that allowed his mental capacity to far exceed that of a normal human adult, against the wishes of Ivan's mother Erika (whom he even kills in the manga). Ivan later fell into the custody of Black Ghost, who dubbed him the first member of the organization's 00-Cyborg program. Ivan's enhanced brain gives him several psychic powers, such as telepathy, telekinesis, and extra-sensory perception. However, he sometimes falls asleep at inopportune times due to the fact that he is still a baby and his body can barely handle such powers. He was one of the 00 Cyborgs who were frozen until more advanced technology and procedures were developed.

Jet was originally 001, but was replaced by Ivan. Jet comes from New York City in the United States and was the leader of the Jets gang in New York's West Side . (In the manga, his character is introduced in a scene that parodies the opening scenes of the movie '' West Side Story ''). During a fight with the Puerto Rican Sharks gang, Jet stabs one of the rival gang members to death, causing the others to run away in order to escape the police. Jet, however, was intercepted by Black Ghost members, who took him away from the scene to be made into a cyborg later. Jet, true to his name, has boosters built into his feet, allowing him to fly at speeds of up to Mach 5. 002 is also equipped with an early form of acceleration module, later refined in 009. He has a brash personality that often conflicts with his peers (in the 2001 series he's even hostile towards them at some points), but is nonetheless a loyal and good-hearted member of the team. He was one of the 00 Cyborgs who were frozen until more advanced technology and procedures were developed. Chronologically, he is in his 40/50s, since he was 18 years old when captured.

Françoise was originally from France . Her brother Jean-Paul, a member of the Air Force, returned to Paris on a one-week leave, and Françoise was to meet him at the train station. However, she was kidnapped by Black Ghost despite numerous attempts by her brother to save her along the way (In the 2001 series she is a ballet dancer to whom Black Ghost offers a fake professional dancing career, so they can kidnap her). The only female member of the team, 003 rarely fights (though she will when needed - in the 2001 series she hijacks a plane and disables a biological weapon practically on her own) and is often seen either directing the battle under Gilmore's guidance or caring for 001. She has enhanced vision and hearing, allowing her to see through walls and notice things that others cannot, and is also an excellent pilot, a good if reckless tactician and a machine whiz. (In the 2001 series, she laments that she can only see and not do anything - to which 009 asks her if she'd rather be like him.) She and 009 later form a romantic relationship, more explicit in the manga (where they were shown having Sex , something quite uncommon in the 70's) and the earlier series, and only implied at in the 2001 series. She was one of the 00 Cyborgs who were frozen until more advanced technology and procedures were developed; she's chronologically in her 50's, being 19 when captured.

Albert was originally from Germany . He and his fiancée Hilda attempted to escape to West Berlin in the guise of Circus members (Albert drove a truck with an animal cage; Hilda dressed up in a lioness costume and stayed in the cage with an actual lion; this is in the manga, since in the 1980 movie and the 2001 series Hilda was Albert's co-pilot). However, because Albert forgot to retrieve his forged identification from a guard, he panicked and sped off. The border guards opened fire on the truck, injuring Albert and killing Hilda in the process. Black Ghost agents arrived on the scene and lied that they would take Albert to a hospital. In the 2001 series, upon waking up as a cyborg, Albert was stricken with despair and developed suicidal tendencies, worsened by the side effects of his modifications which caused him additional physical pain and strain. This ultimately forced Black Ghost to halt the cyborg program for decades, and put the existing cyborgs in suspended animation until technology developed far enough to make future cyborg soldiers more stable. Of all of the 00-Cyborgs, Albert is the one who has had the most cybernetic modification. His right fingertips contains small machine guns, his left hand has razor-sharp edges, and he has missiles hidden in his knees. 004 often has a gruff exterior which belies his friendly personality and disgust with war. (In the 2001 series, he has to fight a robotic version of himself in a castle. He is losing until the robot predicts that he will jump in a certain direction to save himself, but he then jumps in a different direction to save some birds caught up in their battle. The confusion of the robot underscores 004's humanity.). As mentioned, He was the last of the 00 Cyborgs who were frozen until more advanced technology and procedures were made and is the chronologically oldest of the group, being already 30 years old when captured. He also developed a bond with Princess Biina of the Yomi kingdom, which can be interpreted as the first stages of romantic feelings or just sympathy for her deep wish for freedom.

Also called "G-Junior" for short, and was originally from an undisclosed part of the southwest United States . G-Junior is a Native American who was unable to find work due to widespread racism. At age 26, he was approached to be a Native American chief in a sideshow, but G-Junior simply punched the sideshow owner in the face, refusing to further the stereotypes about his culture. Black Ghost agents overheard the conversation and offered G-Junior a job far from home. G-Junior accepted, admitting that he really had no home anymore. (In the 2001 series he was a freelance construction worker bribed into accepting a very promising job offer by disguised Black Ghost agents). 005 was the first created when Black Ghost resumed its cyborg soldier program. Physically, he is the strongest as well as the biggest of the 00-Cyborgs, and he also has heavily armored skin, evidence of Black Ghost's technological evolution since 004. However, he is also a silent, humble man with a deep reverence for nature and life, and it's speculated that he may have a sort of sixth sense that allows him to sense changes in the nature and possibly other people's thoughts.

Chang was originally from China . He was an impoverished Chinese farmer in is early 40's who once owned a pig farm; almost all of his Pig s ran away and he was starving and suffering under heavy taxes. Hopeless, Chang decided to end his misery by Hanging himself. However, he was "saved" by a bullet from Black Ghost which cut the noose. Chang fainted and was later delivered to the Black Ghost laboratory (In the 2001 series, he owns a restaurant - explaining why he's such a good cook - but burns it down after doing a fire-breathing trick, then he loses everything else. Black Ghost agents pick him up when he faints.). 006's power allows him to breathe huge flames. This ability also allows 006 to create tunnels in the earth and attack enemies with underground explosions. Aside from that, he's a jovial fellow who is well-versed in the ways of cooking; his refined cuisine and happy personality always manage to bring his teammates back to good spirits.

Great Britain, whose real name is unknown, was unsurprisingly originally from the United Kingdom . He was once a famous and talented stage actor with a broad knowledge of famous shows. In the 2001 TV series, Great Britain was in love with an actress named Sophie, who worked with him. Later he became more famous and gradually ignored his past love. One financial problem after another arose, and the once great thespian was reduced over time to the life of a penniless nobody who would do anything for a drink or a smoke. Black Ghost agents, noticing his plight, easily lured Great Britain into their vehicle with an alcoholic beverage. Later after his escape with the other cyborgs, Great Britain goes back to the United Kingdom and finds out that his ex-girlfriend had a daughter, Rosa. With the possibility that she might be his child, Great Britain tries to talk to her but is unfortunately rejected and scorned for his past actions (Rosa believed him to have betrayed Sophie), to be redeemed only in the end when he replaces a main actor in Rosa's theatrical play and manages to befriend her. 007 has the incredible ability to reshape his cellular structure at will, allowing him to become any object, creature, or person he wishes (at one point in the 2001 series, he even grows to titanic proportions). With his superb acting skills, he can also blend in with the enemy to use sneaky maneuvers and attacks. Although he is the oldest of the second generation cyborgs, being in his late 40's when kidnapped, 007 is probably the most lighthearted one and is a very amiable guy to boot. His number is an obvious reference to Ian Fleming 's famous British spy character James Bond .

Pyunma was originally from an undisclosed part of Africa . Originally, 23-years-old Pyunma was to have been made a Slave along with the people of his tribe, but he escaped from his chains and ran off. Cornered by the slave drivers, all seemed lost until the slave drivers were shot dead by Black Ghost agents from out of nowhere. Holding Pyunma at gunpoint, they led him to their plane so he could be taken to the cybernetics laboratory. In the 2001 series, Pyunma was a guerrilla fighter who fought against the tyrant ruling his land along with his friends Kabore and Masmado, but was caught in the crossfire during a nocturnal fight, and then Black Ghost people kidnapped him. Pyunma, the only member of the team with any real combat training, has mechanical lungs that allow him to survive for very long periods of time underwater. Pyunma is a serious and cool-headed fighter and decision-maker when the situation demands it. (Very late in the 2001 series, he is given an unwanted rebuild that leaves him with a silver-scaled fishlike body - he is initially horrified by it, but after a talk with 004 he accepts it and even gives his new parts an effective and ingenious use in a fight.)

In the original 1960s incarnations, Pyuma's design was inspired in the darky iconoghraphy of American cartoons, (he has big pink lips), as well in the original manga, and the 1970s series. In the 80s Movie ''Chou Ginga Densetsu'', where Pyuma was redesigned as a less caricature version of himself and this same revamped design was updated for the 2001 series.

Joe aka 009 is from Japan , although he is actually half-Japanese. A delinquent youth, he escaped from a juvenile detention facility before being captured by Black Ghost. In the 2001 anime, he was an orphan taken in by a Catholic priest from Kanazawa along with his street friends (Mary Onodera, Shin'ichi Ibaraki and Masaru Oyamada), then when he turned 18 his mentor was killed by Black Ghost members after they used a group of children that he raised in the church as guinea pigs for the Cyborg project; Joe was wrongfully blamed, then captured by the priest's killers and made into a Cyborg. Although he received several body enhancements during the process of being turned into a cyborg, his most prominent ability is the power to move at a speed so fast that everything else looks like a statue to him (due to an advanced version of 002's acceleration module); this is triggered by a switch embedded in his teeth. However, he cannot touch any normal creatures such as humans in this state; the high speeds would kill or otherwise cause serious injury to the creature through air friction. Joe's trademark aesthetic feature is his flowing, spiked hair, of which a single large lock always covers one of his eyes. He and his best friend in the group, 003 (Françoise Arnoul) later form a romantic relationship, more explicit in the manga (where they were shown having Sex , something quite uncommon in the 70's) and the earlier series, and only implied at in the 2001 series. Also, other girls have shown some degree of romantic interest in him, like Lady Tamara in the 1979 movie, Helen the Pu'Awak princess in the 2001 series, and Princess Ishuki in both manga and the 2001 series. Arguably, Artemis the Greek Goddess of the 2001 series may have had some feelings for him, though those also fit as non-romantic bonding due to their origins.

Humans

Cyborg Men

A group of mass produced cyborg men who help try to spark a war in 008's home country. They wear black suits, which also cover their face with red goggles and an air tube which they appear to need for survival. They usually ride in black tanks. Their leader is Number 1, who is 008's old friend, Masmado. He rides a black saucer with laser shooting tentacles which can detach as robotic snakes. He appears to have lost his good heart after the brainwashing he was put through, so he is defeated by a very reluctant 008 after he fails to convince him.

The Greek Gods

Beings who claim to be the gods who have come to Earth to destroy it, so they may end war and rebuild the world. They themselves do not know they are cyborgs due to their brainwashing. They dress in white Greek clothes with capes and live on a far away island just off the coast of Greece. They were created by Dr. Gaia who erased their memories and led them to believe they were Gods so they would cause destruction and confusion instead of peace. Dr. Gaia is killed by Apollo during the destruction of the island.

The Psychic Assassins

In this arc that's exclusive to the 2001 anime, there's an alternate universe where Black Ghost has won the war against the Cyborgs, and the world is in perpetual war. Humans have developed psychic powers of different kind as self-defense, and even then they live in constant fear. A young man named Nicholas, his girlfriend Lina, Lina's younger brother Phil and their friends Kane and Mai learn that once upon a time, there was peace, and decide to time-travel to search for help. But during their time-jump, they lose sight of Nicholas and arrive, with their life energy completely drained, to the doorstep of Gamo Whisky, Ivan/001's estranged father. Hiding his connections with Black Ghost, he erases the kids' memories and pits them against the Cyborgs to retrieve his child, prove his theories about psychic powers right, and defeat his old rival Gilmore's team. After the Assassins turn against a non-brainwashed Nicholas and one of them kills him, they fight the Cyborgs. Slowly after each regains their memory, they join the Cyborgs after they recuse 009 and Lina from the future, to fight against Gamo and a treacherous Kane. Gamo is fatally wounded and 001 forgives his father before he dies, since he remembers that Gamo's madness started after he failed to cure Ivan's old birth disease. They each have telepathic abilities, telekinesis, psychic barriers and can teleport at will.

The Yomi Kingdom

Deep buried in the Earth's grounds, the Yomi kingdom and its inhabitants, the Pu'Awak, have been enslaved by the dinosaur race known as the Ath-hans, who treat them as slaves and use their natural fertility to keep them as living food supplies. Black Ghost, or more specifically Scarl and his underling Klaus Von Bogoot, suddenly appear to trick the Pu'Awaks into following them to fight for freedom, and they choose five Pu'Awake noble-born sisters as their subordinates. However, the girls (Biina, Helen, Daphne, Aphros and Diana) are soon disenchanted, and decide to join the Cyborgs instead to reach for true freedom.

Skull / Black Ghost

The tyrannical leader of the Black Ghost Organization (its main mission is to cause war between two global powers by dealing weapons). His true identity is not known because he wears a helmet, which looks like a skull, and an all-black suit (which appears to have what looks like ribs) followed by a red cape. His given name is, according to some sources, Skull. He was almost killed when the 9 cyborgs entered Black Ghost's Base (what they thought was Black Ghost HQ until later in the manga and anime) and set explosives leaving 009 and Black Ghost to fight one-on-one. It is revealed that Black Ghost is not only a cyborg, but a highly advanced cyborg, soundly defeating 009 using his superior acceleration mode. Only a last ditch effort managed to save the nine cyborgs (009 held on to Black Ghost whilst plummeting into what looked like a vat of liquid nitrate and then 001 teleported 009 to safety). It is not known how Black Ghost survived the explosion. In addition to Black Ghost apparently being a cyborg himself (which is revealed in both the manga and anime), the true leaders of the Black Ghost Organization turn out to be three brains (this is revealed in the final episode of the anime and the final pages of the manga).

North American releases

''Chou Ginga Densetsu'' had a little-known direct-to-video English release in 1995 by Best Film and Video Corporation. Before that, it had been released stateside in 1988 by Celebrity Home Entertainment as ''Defenders of the Vortex''. More recently, the 2001 version was licensed by Avex Inc. (the North American branch of Avex Mode, the 2001 series' original distributor in Japan) and dubbed into English by Animaze and ZRO Limit Productions. The first 8 episodes of the show are currently available on DVD from Columbia TriStar Entertainment in both an uncut bilingual and a dub-only "cut" broadcast version, though as of 2007, none of the other episodes have become available in the US.

International Releases

The 1979 version aired in Italy and became popular with Italian viewers.

The 2001 version aired on MBC 3 several times starting from 2005 and became extremely popular with Arab viewers.

Live-action

On November 15 2005 , Japan's Itochu group and Michael Uslan 's American-based Comic Book Movie LLC announced they were collaborating to produce a Hollywood film based on Shotaro Ishinomori 's manga. Cyborg 009 was said to top the list of properties from the prolific Mangaka to be on the adaptation block, with a projected North American theatrical opening in 2008. Ishimori Entertainment was said to be connected with the joint production contract, and it would have a role in the selection of the work to be adapted. Filming had begun back in 2006.
