Information About

Cosby

''Cosby'' was an American Situation Comedy Television series broadcast on CBS Television from 1996 to 2000 .

The eponymous star of the series was Bill Cosby , who played grumpy Hilton Lucas, a man forced into early (and unwanted) retirement. His wife, Ruth, was played by Phylicia Rashād , who had also starred as Cosby's wife in the epochal 1980s sitcom '' The Cosby Show ''. (Initially, Telma Hopkins was cast as Ruth Lucas; however, due to lack of Chemistry between her and Cosby, the producers hired Rashād instead.) The couple had one daughter, Erica Lucas, portrayed by T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh . Also appearing on the series were Madeline Kahn , who played neighbor Pauline Fox from 1996 until her death in 1999 , and Doug E. Doug , who played Griffin Vesey, a friend of the Lucas family who tried occasionally to win Erica's affections.

The show itself was based on the concept from the BBC series '' One Foot In The Grave '', starring Richard Wilson and Annette Crosbie . David Renwick , the creator and writer of ''One Foot in the Grave'', was listed as an executive producer of ''Cosby''. One Foot In The Grave was noted as containing very dark humour for a Mainstream Sitcom , and was therefore a surprising choice for adaptation to USA TV. Predictably, the tone was significantly lightened, although certain controversial scenes, such as a scene in which the lead character incinerates a live Tortoise , were recreated (albeit with a Turtle in this case).

TRIVIA

In 2000, the episode ''Loving Madeline'' showed the cast in a living room talking about their experiences with the late Madeline Kahn . Every memory spoken by each member was interspersed with Madeline clips from past episodes. It was in the tradition of episodes dedicated to beloved cast members who died in real life.
