A Baylor College Of Medicine faculty member, Dr. Benton was the third person murdered by Ángel Maturino Reséndiz , infamous as "The Railway Killer." Benton was killed in her home in the city of West University Place , Texas , which is partially surrounded by Houston . Benton was raped, stabbed, and bludgeoned repeatedly after he entered her home. Police found her Jeep Cherokee in San Antonio and found Reséndiz's fingerprints on the steering column. Six months later, her killer became the 457th fugitive placed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List , under his then known name, Rafael Resendez-Ramirez, after having committed additional murders as far north as Illinois . With a large reward offered for his capture and Mexican bounty hunters on his trail in Mexico, he arranged to surrender to a Texas Ranger in El Paso, Texas. The Sunset Route of the Union Pacific Railroad runs along the western boundary of West University Place, and Dr. Benton's home was very near to these tracks. Resindez was known to be a drifter who moved around the country on freight trains. Dr. Benton was the mother of twin daughters. Maturino Resendiz was found guilty of Dr. Claudia Benton's capital murder in 2000, and executed by , 2006 , in Huntsville, Texas .
