Charley Grapewin




Charles E. Grapewin ( December 20 , 1869 , Xenia, OhioFebruary 2 , 1956 , Corona, California ) was an American Vaudeville performer, and a stage and film actor.

Grapewin first worked as an aerialist and Trapeze artist in a traveling Circus before turning to acting. He performed on stage with various stock companies and wrote stage plays as a vehicle for him to star in.

He married actress Anna Chance (1875-1943) 1and they remained a devoted couple until her death some 47 years later. Grapewin began in Silent Film s around the turn of the century and almost forty years later appeared as Uncle Henry in the Movie '' The Wizard Of Oz '' and as Grandpa Joad in '' The Grapes Of Wrath ''. During his long career, Grapewin appeared in more than one hundred films, one of them being '' Tobacco Road '' ( 1941 ), a version of the hit Broadway play and novel that was produced as a film comedy. During the 1940s, he had a recurring role as Inspector Queen, father of Ellery Queen .

Grapewin died in 1956, and was buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California . 2
