Centerpointe Mall is an enclosed Shopping Mall located in Grand Rapids, Michigan , United States . It opened in 1967 as Eastbrook Mall, a year before the larger Woodland Mall opened across the street. Centerpointe Mall is currently a Dead Mall , featuring approximately 30 tenants, most of which are Big Box stores. The mall's current Anchor Store s include Klingman's Furniture, DSW Shoe Warehouse , Modern Skate & Surf , Dunham's Sports , Nordstrom Rack, Steve & Barry's University Sportswear , Old Navy , TJ Maxx , Linens 'n Things , Golf Galaxy and Menards .1 Centerpointe Mall is managed by General Growth Properties , and owned by Lormax Stern. HISTORY Eastbrook Mall opened in on the east, with local department stores Wurzburg's and Steketee's as the western and northern anchors, respectively. A second, larger mall was being built across the street - the larger Woodland Mall , which featured JCPenney , Sears , and Kresge as its anchors when it opened in 1968 . Wurzburg's closed in the late 1970s and was replaced by Klingman's Furniture, which occupies the former Wurzburg's space to this day.2 Woolco closed all United States operations in late 1982 ; the large Woolco store was split among Burlington Coat Factory , F & M Drugstore, and Showbiz Pizza Place. Also in the 1980s, Witmark , a local Catalog Showroom , opened in the west wing, and discount retailer TJ Maxx opened in the east wing. A new wing was added next to Burlington Coat Factory in 1987, bringing in Hills as an additional anchor tenant. Hills closed its Michigan stores in the early 1990s, and the Eastbrook store was eventually converted to Menards , a home-improvement chain. MC Sports eventually replaced F&M Drugstore, and Chuck E. Cheese's replaced Showbiz Pizza; MC Sports, in turn, was later replaced by Golf Galaxy. RENOVATIONS Since Eastbrook Mall had never been remodeled since its opening, the mall looked quite dated throughout the 1990s. Most of the inline tenants had left. In addition, Witmark closed in 1997,3 and Steketee's closed in 2000,4 leaving two anchor spaces vacant. Lormax Stern acquired the mall from Visser Brothers in 2000, renovating the center and re-naming it Centerpointe Mall. New stores, including Steve & Barry's, Lane Bryant , and Dunham's Sports, were added. Burlington Coat Factory re-located outside the mall; their former store at Centerpointe was soon converted to Linens 'n Things and two smaller stores. The former Witmark was converted to Modern Skate & Surf, a Skate Park , while Steketee's was demolished for Nordstrom Rack and two new mall entrances. Throughout 2004 and 2005, Old Navy, DSW Shoe Warehouse, and David's Bridal opened as well. In 2006, General Growth Properties assumed leasing of management of the mall, with Lormax Stern retaining ownership. REDEVELOPMENT The mall will be demolished and become a shopping center with outdoor pedestrian-friendly structures. All tenants will remain. The owner plans to add 30 more stores.5 Nordstrom Rack, Menards, Steve & Barry's and Dunham's Sports will remain in place, while remaining stores will be re-located within the center. Redevelopment is expected to be completed in 2009. REFERENCES EXTERNAL LINKS |
