Candice Wilmer is a Fictional Character featured in the television show '' Heroes ''. She is portrayed by Missy Peregrym . Spellings '''Candice''' and '''Candace''' are both used in the show, and NBC has made no official confirmation one way or the other. She is first mentioned in " Homecoming ", as her name is on the list of evolved humans. "The List", created by Chandra Suresh, stated her as currently living in Clayton, New York . BACKGROUND Candice's origins are revealed in the four-part ''Heroes'' Web Comic ''Betty''. Betty is an overweight, Goth outcast at her local high school, along with her fellow pariah Ren. Betty first discovers her ability to create illusions when she uses it to create ugly boils on the face of a cheerleader who is insulting her. Subsequently, she confronts Crash, a star football player, tormenting him with a vision of his father as a Satan-like figure who is angry about him losing a game. The player is later mentioned as being catatonic due to the experience. When Betty inadvertently leads others to believe that the situation is Ren's fault, Crash's teammates assault Ren. The event, and Ren's own fearful reaction, nearly kill him. Betty shows Ren her power by copying his appearance, causing him to go into Shock and die. At a pep rally the next day, after witnessing the nonchalance with which people treat Ren's death, Betty shows the entire school body an apocalyptic vision of explosions and melting cheerleaders. She walks away, changing her appearance and adopting the name Candice. EPISODE APPEARANCES In " Company Man ", Candice monitors a sedated Matt Parkman . Mr. Bennet asks if she has an ability, to which Thompson replies that she is being developed and will "clean up" the mess Mr. Bennet made. She's next seen watching behind a window with Matt Parkman as Thompson interrogates Mr. Bennet in the medical facility at Primatech . As Matt tells Thompson that Mr. Bennet isn't lying, Candice tells Thompson that he owes her five bucks. Later, at the Bennets' hotel room, Candice knocks at the door. When Mr. Bennet answers, she explains that he has another assignment. He closes the door, and she stops it with her boot. She enters, has a brief conversation with Sandra Bennet about the paper company, and compliments her hair. In Isaac Mendez 's apartment, a detective questions Isaac about Simone Deveaux 's disappearance. Simone suddenly walks in, and the detective leaves, assuming everything is alright. Simone turns into Candice, showing her true form. Following this, she sadistically teases Isaac, becoming Simone again, complete with gunshot wounds. In the Bennets' hotel room, Mr. Bennet talks to Sandra secretly about Claire Bennet and that they must pretend they know nothing. The phone rings and Sandra answers. Thompson emerges and Candice once again shows her true form and facetiously says, "Sorry". In " .07% ", while being held in a cell at Primatech Paper Co., Mr. Bennet gets a visit from an unexpected person — Claire. Dressed in her cheerleading uniform, she runs into his arms and says that she tried to do what he told her but that The Company still managed to get her. Bennet, knowing that Claire isn't acting normal and wouldn't be dressed the way she is, pushes her away. Claire is revealed to be only an illusion and Candice resumes her usual appearance. Thompson arrives and tells her to leave. Jessica Sanders , still posing as Niki, prepares to take Micah Sanders to Mr. Linderman , when Linderman arrives at their home. He asks Micah if he would like to "save the world". Jessica smiles and stays behind while Linderman takes Micah. Once they leave, the illusion of Jessica transforms back into Candice. When the real Jessica arrives, Candice leaves, but not before slyly complimenting Jessica on her "cute car". In " The Hard Part ", the Sanderses in Las Vegas discover that Linderman has abducted Micah and they head to New York to find him. Meanwhile, in a skyrise building in NYC, Candice is on the phone talking to Linderman. Micah discovers that Candice is impersonating his mother and tries to escape. However, Candice changes the appearance of the corridors so that he cannot find a way out, bringing him straight back to the real room. She tells him that she doesn't want to hurt him, but warns him that she could use her power to scar him for life. In " Landslide ", Candice takes Micah to a voting booth to have him help Nathan Petrelli win the election by controlling the voting computers. She tells him that they will repeat the process at 12 different precincts, and is surprised when Micah says that he can do it all from one booth. He asks by how much does she want Nathan to win, and she tells him, "By a landslide". Micah obeys, and after a few moments releases the computer, asking if he can go home. In " How To Stop An Exploding Man ", Candice fights Niki in the form of Jessica. However, Niki uses her new superhuman strength to knock out Candice and escape with Micah. Curiously, upon falling unconscious, the Jessica illusion fades, but the Candice appearance remains. ALTERNATE FUTURE Candice does not appear in the episode " Five Years Gone ", but she is mentioned when Future Hiro asks Mr. Bennet, currently working to hide people with "harmless" powers, where she is. It is also implied that Hiro brought Candice, along with a number of other characters, to Mr. Bennet for protection. Future Hiro wants Candice and her ability in order to stage a raid on President Nathan Petrelli's holding facility without the help of the then-unwilling Peter Petrelli. It is said that she was killed by Sylar . The serial killer (under the guise of Nathan Petrelli ) says, "Lord knows I found enough power, met a lot of special people ... like this girl named Candice who allowed me to become President." Sylar, believed to have died in the explosion that decimated New York, actually survived, killed Nathan Petrelli at an unknown point, and impersonated him using Candice's powers. POWERS Candice has the ability to create nearly flawless illusions, usually used to disguise herself as another person. In addition to herself, Candice can also create large-scale illusions, hiding others with her power or creating a looping maze within a hotel room. While Micah speculates that her power involves bending light in "Landslide", her power is clearly more complex. When she was impersonating Sandra Bennet, Mr. Bennet talked to, held, and kissed her without penetrating the disguise. Sylar's use of this power in "Five Years Gone" demonstrates that the illusions can also fool electronic equipment like cameras, since he was able to disguise himself on national television. The visual effects used for Candice's powers vary depending on the illusion she creates. When used on herself, the effect is a small "shimmer" around herself and her immediate surroundings. Larger illusions create a larger warping effect. Candice has also threatened, on more than one occasion, to bring forth illusions of such horrific intensity that they would drive her target insane. She comes close to doing this in the season finale, " How To Stop An Exploding Man ", when she creates an illusion of Micah dead on the floor for Niki while portraying herself as Niki's alter-ego, Jessica. She also takes the form of Simone (complete with gunshot wounds) when first displaying her power in " Parasite ", but did so to mock Isaac Mendez , not scare him. In the graphic novel "Betty, Part 2", Candice causes a bully named "Crash" to fall into a catatonic state after showing him a demonic figure of his father. In " Landslide " Candice implies that her normal appearance (the one portrayed by Missy Peregrym) is also an illusion when Micah says " I have a cousin who eats like you...he's huge," to which she replies, "So am I." She also lectures him on how others judge by appearance. However, when Niki knocks her unconscious in "How to Stop an Exploding Man" while she is disguised as Jessica, Candice reverts back to her appearance as portrayed by Missy Peregrym. In the episode commentary for " Parasite ", Allan Arkush and Christopher Zatta discuss Candice's power. Zatta says he believed it was important that Candice's ability be a mental one — that is, to appear like other characters rather than to physically become other characters — to be more in keeping with the other powers in the show. As such, Candice does not necessarily have to have met an individual she is impersonating. She was able to impersonate Simone Deveaux, although they apparently never met before Simone's death, and Candice had not seen Simone's dead body until after she appeared in her form. She also shows apparent knowledge of Niki's past and her alter ego, even though Candice and Niki are near-complete strangers; however, she could have easily gotten this information from Linderman. In addition, Candice doesn't need to be within visual range to create an illusion. When she trapped Micah in a looping illusion, she was in the shower at the time. SEE ALSO |
