, or '''BG''' is a public High School located in Buffalo Grove, Illinois , a northwest suburb of Chicago . One of six four-year comprehensive high schools in Township High School District 214 , serving portions of the Villages of Arlington Heights , Buffalo Grove, and Wheeling .
- Drawing students and staff from Wheeling and John Hersey High Schools, and fed by Cooper Junior High, Rand Junior High, Saint Mary's Catholic School in Buffalo Grove, and a smattering of students from Saint Peter's Lutheran School in Arlington Heights, BGHS opens for business with no seniors. The juniors of the fall of '73 are the "top dogs" of the school for two years running!
- The school's colors are chosen--the blue and orange of the University Of Illinois beats out gold and brown; the four choices drawn from Wheeling's blue and gold, and John Hersey's brown and orange. U of I's alma mater is adopted as Buffalo Grove's school song, with slight changes to the wording.
- Dr. Clarence M. "Chick" Miller, formerly assistant principal at Wheeling High School , was named the school's first principal. Richard R. "Dick" Schnell--who coined the phrase "Back Those Bison"--formerly at Wheeling as a social science teacher and coach, is named an assistant principal. Norman Patberg, formerly at Forest View High School in Arlington Heights , is named as the other assistant principal. Paul Mueller, a science teacher from Wheeling, is chosen as Director of Student Activities. Wayne Selvig, from the physical education staff at Wheeling is the first athletic director.
- The Class of 1975 becomes the first to graduate from the last high school built in District 214.
- Buffalo Grove's theatre department produces the first non-professional production of Godspell in America; directed by John Marquette, the play is so well-received that an extra weekend is added to the production run.
- On March 12th, President Gerald Ford , running a hard-fought campaign against former California Governor Ronald Reagan , makes a March primary appearance in the gymnasium of Buffalo Grove High School.
- The Class of '77, the original freshmen from the building's opening year, complete four full years at Buffalo Grove High School.
- Math teacher and legendary wrestling coach, Bob Tipsword, begins his nearly three-decade career on the BG staff.
- The drama department produces "The Boyfriend" as its musical.
- Girls' Varsity Basketball makes its first appearance in the state's Final Four.
- "Porch," a one-act play, makes the state theatre teachers' association finals at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois ; the individual events (forensics) team wins the sectional championship.
- After the close of the school year, the school loses its band director, Bill Carroll, when he is killed by a drunken driver.
- Homecoming is a virtual washout, with heavy weather throughout the football game in October.
- Significant numbers of seniors receiving supplemental social security benefits due to the death of a parent, are forced to choose between early graduation to enroll in college, and loss of income benefits, on turning age 18.
- As District 214 faces falling enrollments, closing two of eight schools, including 62-year-old Arlington High School , substantial numbers of staffers retire throughout the district. As the academic year closes, significant numbers of BG's original staff depart to administrative roles elsewhere in the district; others take the chance to shift into new teaching positions elsewhere. Chick Miller retires and is replaced by Marv Christensen. Dick Schnell becomes Associate Principal. Norm Patberg transfers to Rolling Meadows.
