Brighton is a suburb in Melbourne , Victoria , Australia , 12 km southeast of the city. Much of the suburb lies on the shore of Port Phillip Bay . NOTABLE RESIDENTS
CHARACTERISTICS Brighton is known to house the wealthiest citizens in Melbourne with is distinguished grand homes, and the development of large residential blocks of land. On the beach, Beach Road is a popular cycling route, with off-road cycling tracks also on the beach. The North Road Pavillion is a popular cafe which has an outlook of Port Phillip Bay, while the beachfront features stunning views toward the Melbourne city skyline. North Road Brighton features many old churches and residences. The main beach in Brighton has the historic Moderne Brighton Baths. There are two cinemas in Brighton; The Dendy Brighton and The Brighton Bay. There is also a children's swim school, Paul Saddler swim school. HISTORY The European settlement of Brighton began in 1840 with land allotments by the British Government's Land and Emigration Commission. The township was named after Brighton in England . TRANSPORT Brighton is serviced primarily by private vehicles and trains. Gardenvale , North Brighton , Middle Brighton , Brighton Beach on the Sandringham Line . Tram s also service the eastern extremities of the suburb. The Bayside Trail off-road bicycle path passes through the Brighton foreshore.
