GEOGRAPHICAL POSITION

Belmont is a Linear settlement in the middle of the West Pennine Moors , built along the A675. It lies about 8 km northwest of Bolton in a valley between Anglezarke Moor and Turton Moor .

The Winter Hill Transmitting Station stands on Winter Hill about a km southwest of the village. Note that there is an unrelated Belmont Transmitting Station in the East of England which provides television signals to parts of Lincolnshire .

HISTORY

The village used to thrive due to the business of a local dye factory owned by Thomas Rycroft. The factory is sadly not in operation anymore. The employee count was less than 20, and the factory went out of business recently (late 2005). It is situated in the "Bottomend" of the village. The local landmark chimney has also been demolished.

Following a fire at the "Topend" factory several years ago, a new housing estate has been developed with houses designed to look traditional. This effect has been carried out on neighbouring estates as well.

RESERVOIRS

The reservoir in Belmont is called Wards Reservoir. It is known locally as the Blue Lagoon. There is a much larger reservoir to the north of the village called Belmont reservoir which is home to Bolton Sailing Club.
