Baumholder is a town and a municipality in the District Of Birkenfeld , in Rhineland-Palatinate , Germany . It is situated south of the Hunsrück , approx. 10 km south of Idar-Oberstein . Baumholder is the seat of the '' Verbandsgemeinde '' ("collective municipality") Baumholder . U.S. MILITARY GARRISON IN BAUMHOLDER Baumholder is home to the largest concentration of American combat soldiers outside the United States. The installation consists of Smith Barracks, which is the main post, and the base operations area support teams of Strassburg in Idar-Oberstein and Neubrücke , near Birkenfeld .
