Battersea Dogs and Cats Home is a long-established and charitable home for cats and dogs in the Battersea area of London , England . Formerly the Temporary Home for Lost and Starving Dogs, it was established in Holloway in 1860 , by Mrs Mary Tealby. The home moved to Battersea in 1871 and is located in Central London with a view of the river Thames In 2005 the well-known name of Battersea Dogs Home was changed to the current name in order to make clear that both Dog s and Cats are cared for (The home began catering for cats in 1883). However, the former name has entered popular British culture, and is referred to in a number of episodes of the classic radio comedy, '' The Goon Show ''.
