Bassick High School is a public High School located in Bridgeport, Connecticut . ACADEMICS "Bassick High School is plagued by the problems of poor academic achievement as measured on State and National examinations, student poverty, absenteeism, and dropouts," according to a U.S. Department of Education Web page based on information from an application filed by the city school district for a federal grant. "In addition, many students at Bassick High School require additional educational services such as Special Education and English as a Second Language. Finally, many students arrive at the school lacking grade-level skills in reading and mathematics, making learning difficult for them in all curricular areas." {Link without Title} Web page titled "Smaller Learning Communities Awards database / Bassick High School", accessed April 1 , 2007 As of 2006, the school administration planned to continue developing "Achievement and Career Academies" within the school. "These Academies will create small communities of learners that will personalize the educational experience for each student and provide needed support for increased levels of academic achievement," according to the federal Department of Education Web site. "Through an Advisory Program, Bassick will ensure that each student is known well by at least one adult member of the school community." The program was also to integrate reading and mathematics instruction. In the federal 2006 fiscal year, The U.S. Department of Education awarded the school $476,753 for a five-year "Smaller Learning Communities" grant. Congrats to the class of 2007. ATHLETICS The school is a member of the FCIAC conference. As of 2006, Bassick has not won a football game in five years and the Lions are approaching the modern record of 53 games without a win, set by Bullard-Havens in 2001. Officially, Bassick has lost 47 straight and has gone 48 games without a victory. They've made global headlines in newspapers published as far away as Germany and New Zealand for being the first Connecticut team to get beaten by 50 points under the CIAC 's score management policy. Despite the lackluster performance made my the school's football team. Bassick's Boy's basketball team year started with the lost of junior TaVon Duharte. They had ceremony during their first game in which they retireed his jersey.
