Basketball At The Summer Olympics




Basketball has been played consistently at the ''' Summer Olympic Games ''' since 1936 , with a demonstration event in 1904 . The United States have won all the gold medals in the men's competition from 1936 - 2004 , with the exception of 1972 , 1988 ( Soviet Union ), 1980 ( Yugoslavia ) when they did not participate because of the boycott of the Olympic games, and in 2004 when Argentina won the gold medal.



VENUES

All venues were indoor stadiums except for the 1936 tournament which was held outdoors on tennis courts.


QUALIFYING

Teams qualify according to the FIBA Zone they're affiliated with. The distribution of the different FIBA Zones as per follows, for the 2008 tournament:
The wildcards qualify via another qualifying tournament where the best teams from the zones which did not qualify automatically a few weeks before the Olympics.
