The BMW M54 is a modern Straight-6 engine, debuting in the year 2000 . It is an evolution of the BMW M52 . The engine has Double VANOS Variable Valve Timing to adjust timing of both intake and exhaust valves. __NOTOC__ M54B22 The 2.2 L (2171 ccm/132 in³) M54B22 produced 125 kW (170 hp) at 6100 rpm and 210 N·m (155 ft·lbf) at 3500 rpm. Applications:
M54B25 The M54B25 is a 2.5 L (2494 ccm) engine with an 84 mm bore and 75 mm stroke. It is all-alloy with Al-Sil block, fracture-split forged steel connecting rods, a one-piece cast camshaft, and a reinforced plastic intake manifold. Output is 190 hp (143 kW) at 6000 RPM with 175 ft.lbf (245 Nm) of torque at 3500 RPM. It is built in Steyr , Austria . Applications:
M54B30 The M54B30 is a 3.0 L (2979 ccm) successor of the 2.8 L BMW M52 . Bore remains the same at 84 mm, but stroke is increased 5.6 mm to 89.6 mm. Power is 231 hp (168 kW) while torque is 221 ft.lbf (290 Nm). It is an all-alloy engine with Al-Sil block. It uses SFI Fuel Injection , has 4 Valves Per Cylinder with VVT and features fracture-split forged steel connecting rods, a one-piece cast camshaft, and reinforced plastic intake manifold. It is produced in Steyr , Austria . The M54B30 was on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list through 2001-2003. Applications:
S54B32
The S54B32 is a high-performance engine used in BMW M vehicles. It replaces the S52B32 engine of the E36 M3. Its block is made from grey cast iron rather than aluminum to achieve greater rigidity from the same dimensions. It is a 3.2 L (3246 ccm) engine; bore is 87 mm and stroke is 91 mm. Power output is 338 hp (252 kW) at 7900 rpm with 269 ft.lbf (365 Nm) market of torque at 4900 rpm with an 8000 rpm redline. These performance numbers apply only to non-US versions of this engine, as the US version of this engine required some modifications (such as a close-coupled Catalytic Converter on the engine exhaust ports) and thus produced slightly less power at 333 hp (248 kW) and 262 ft.lbf (355 Nm). The S54 won the International Engine Of The Year award overall for 2001, and also claimed the "Best New Engine" that year as well as won the 3-4 L category for six straight years in a row from 2001 through 2006 - so far. The S54 was also on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 2002 through 2004. The S54 used to be known as the Engine of Damocles because of the tendency of early production M3s to explode spectacularly at elevated engine speeds. BMW attempted to blame vehicle owners for the failures early on but eventually started replacing rod Bearing s, oil pumps, and whole engines under Warranty . This fault a problem with the connecting rod bottom-end bearing shells that were supplied to BMW by a third party that did not meet BMW's specifications. . This problem was fully corrected by BMW on engines produced after 06/2003. A recall was done to retrofit all previously produced engines with the proper bearing shells. As of 2006 the S54 continues to be used in the M Coupe and M Roadster Applications:
