This is a list of operational and former Australian Prisons . Prisons listed as museum are former prisons now open for public inspection and tours. Currently, sentenced prisoners in the Australian Capital Territory serve their sentences in New South Wales prisons pending the construction of a prison in the ACT due in 2007 . Several prisons are privatised and managed by groups such as GSL Custodial Services (formerly Group 4). Victorian Prisons are mostly located in Regional Victoria. The Prison system is relatively mordern with the closure of the last of the "old" jails in 2005. Bendigo and Won Wron were the last to be closed.
