The project has studied other Space Colonization projects as well, including Colonies On Outer Planet Moons , such as Europa , thought to contain Water oceans under their icy crusts. The project appears to have lapsed, the newest "news" is from Mar 2000, and references the Moon Society . OVERVIEW Currently the Artemis Project has designed the ''Reference Mission''http://www.asi.org/adb/01/03/brief-overview.html which provides enough infrastructure to create a small lunar base. It is not known if any flight hardware has been produced. Mission Hardware Lunar transfer vehicle to the Moon ]] The Lunar transfer Vehicle consists of a single Spacehab module with communications equipment, Solar Panels and an added booster stage. The Lunar Transfer Vehicle carries the crew as they travel from the Earth to the Moon. It is left in Lunar Orbit as the crew descend to the lunar surface. Lunar base habitat The lunar habitat consists of three Spacehab modules and a decent stage. It also contains other equipment such as Solar Panels , Radiators and communications equipment. Accent Stage The accent stage is used by the crew to return to a lunar orbit from the surface of the moon. Unlike the Lunar Module of the Apollo Program , the accent stage does not maintain a breathable Atmosphere . Because of this, a protective Space Suit would have to be worn throughout the flight to protect the Astronaut from the harsh conditions of Space . FUTURE PLANS Once a base has been built on the moon it is hoped that a lunar hotel will be establishedhttp://www.asi.org/adb/01/02/moonvac.html. However it is not known how economically feasible this will be since low cost access to space (possibly involving SSTO or TSTO vehicles) has yet to be developed.
