He finished Chekhov Secondary School 1966 and graduated from the State Yerevan Polytechnic Institute in 1971. He joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1972. From 1989-1990 he was elected the Mayor Of Yerevan . In 1990, he quit the Communist Party. From 1995-1999 he served as a deputy of the National Assembly . He is the leader of the National Unity Party which was founded by him in April 1997. He was a candidate in Armenia's 2003 presidential elections.
