Peterson and his brother Lamont Peterson are regularly featured on ESPN boxing telecasts, and their story has been frequently discussed on the show. The Petersons were left without parents at an early age, with their father in prison and their monther suffering personal issues. The brothers were reportedly homeless on the streets of Washington, DC for several years {Link without Title} . While homeless, they were noticed by Barry Hunter, a boxing coach. Over time Hunter developed their boxing skills while mentoring them, and both brothers morphed into amateur boxing stars. AMATEUR CAREER Peterson had an outstanding amateur career, and was the 2003 National Golden Gloves Lightweight Champion. In 2004 he lost twice to Vicente Escobedo at 132lbs which cost him his place in Athens.He and brother Lamaot also won the Junior Olympic National Tournament in the amateurs. PROFESSIONAL CAREER Peterson turned pro in 2004 and has won all 22 of his professional fights, including 13 by way of KO. Peterson and his brother Lamont have become virtual house fighters on ESPN 's fight cards, and thus their careers have been propelled into the spotlight.
