Ann Kirkpatrick is a member of the Arizona House Of Representatives . On July 24 , 2007 she officially launched her Campaign for the Democratic nomination to Arizona's 1st Congressional District . She will be seeking Rick Renzi 's seat in congress who recently announced he is not running for reelection, as he is currently under investigation by the FBI . PERSONAL LIFE Born-and-raised in Arizona, Ann Kirkpatrick's earliest roots are found in Eastern Arizona. Born in McNary on the White Mountain Apache Reservation, her first language is not English, but Apache. Ann graduated from Blue Ridge High School in the White Mountains and then went on to the University of Arizona, where she earned a bachelor's degree and then a law degree from the University of Arizona College of Law. Since earning her law degree, Ann has served the people of Arizona in a wide variety of positions. First, in 1980, she became Coconino County's first female Deputy County Attorney. Then Ann served the people of Sedona as a City Attorney. And in 2004, she began teaching Business Law and Ethics at Coconino Community College. POLITICAL LIFE In November 2004, Ann was elected to the Arizona House of Representatives to represent Legislative District 2, which includes Flagstaff and the Havasupai, Hopi, Hualapai, Navajo, and San Juan Southern Piute Nations. At the State Capitol, Ann has worked to bring fiscal accountability to Phoenix and has worked to protect tax payers' dollars in her position as the Ranking Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee. The mother of two college-age daughters, Ann has worked to improve the quality of education for all Arizona's youth through her service on the Education K-12 Committee. And as a member of the Natural Resources Committee, her fight to preserve Arizona's beautiful natural landscape has been lauded by the Arizona Sierra Club, who gave her an "A" rating, and Arizona's League of Conservation Voters. COMMUNITY SERVICE She is an active member of the Flagstaff community. She is active in community service, having been the former president of United Way of Northern Arizona and the Flagstaff Symphony Association. She also served on the Board of Directors of Big Sisters, the Flagstaff Library Foundation, and Lowell Observatory. POLITICAL VIEWS She is an advocate for fiscal responsibility, long-term economic growth in rural Arizona, and investment in the education of our children. She supports ending discrimination based on Sexual Orientation, Increasing teacher salaries, raising the Arizona dropout age, banning all gifts from lobbyists, property tax rollbacks, and is one of the leading voices in the House for Native American Issues. Kirkpatrick supports electing the United States President through a national popular vote, rather than the current Electoral College Method. 2008 CAMPAIGN On August 23 , 2007 , Incumbent Republican Congressman Rick Renzi announced that he would not seek re-election, due to being under investigation by the FBI . In the Democratic Primary, Kirkpatrick will face announced candidates Attorney Howard Shanker, Arizona Environmental Quality Director Steve Owens, and journalist Mary Kim Titla. If she wins the Primary, she could face Republican candidates State Senator Tom O'Halleran , Arizona Corporation Commissioner Kris Mayes, State Representative Bill Konopnicki, or Sydney Hay, President of the Arizona Mining Association.
