Academy Award For Best Original Song

The Academy Award for Best Original Song is one of the awards given to people working in the Motion Picture industry by the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences ; nominations are made by Academy members who are songwriters and composers. The winners are chosen by the Academy membership as a whole. It is important to understand that it is the '''songwriters''' that win, not the performers, and that only '''original''' songs written for the film are eligible for this category.

The award category was introduced at the 7th Academy Awards , the ceremony honoring the best in film for 1934.

THE "ORIGINAL" REQUIREMENT

Only songs that are "original and written specifically for the film" are eligible to win. {Link without Title}
Songs that became popular prior to a film's production, such as " Unchained Melody " in the 1990 film '' Ghost '' and " I Will Always Love You " in the 1992 film '' The Bodyguard '', cannot qualify.

When a film is Adapted from a previously written Musical , all of the songs from that musical are also ineligible. As a result, recent film adaptions have included original songs in order to be nominated, such as " You Must Love Me " from the 1996 film '' Evita '' and " Listen " from the 2006 film '' Dreamgirls ''.

PERFORMANCES AT THE AWARDS CEREMONY

As the Academy Awards ceremonies have become a glitzy spectacle shown on television around the world, the nominated songs are performed live. In general, the person or group who performed the nominated songs in the films appear at the awards ceremonies. However in certain cases, the Academy instead picks well-recognized performers to boost the show's ratings.

The ceremony is also valuable exposure for these performers looking to boost their careers. A number of solo artistes and groups such as Barbra Streisand , Bruce Springsteen , and members of Three 6 Mafia have also written and performed award winning songs.

Even Madonna is not a winner of any Academy Award yet, the two times that she had performed a song in the ceremony, the songwriter wins the Oscar for Best Original Song. Those two songs are " Sooner Or Later (I Always Get My Man) ", from Dick Tracy in 1990 ceremony; and " You Must Love Me ", from Evita , in 1997.

Foreign language winners

Manos Hadjidakis was the first to receive this award for a song originally written in a language other than English, in 1960 for '' Ta Paidia Toy Peiraia '' from the Greek film '' Pote Tin Kyriaki ''.

Jorge Drexler was the second foreign language songwriter to win the Best Original Song Oscar, for '' Al Otro Lado Del Río '' from '' The Motorcycle Diaries '' in 2004 . That year another foreign language writing pair were nominated, composer Bruno Coulais and lyricist Christophe Barratier for ''Vois Sur Ton Chemin (Look To Your Path)'' from the French movie '' Les Choristes ''.
