The major difference in the championship format is that ''It's Academic'' uses a Playoff method, while ''Academic Challenge'' simply invites the three highest-scoring schools for a championship game, though the Cleveland show experimented with Playoff s during the late 1990s . It has won several awards, including the Emmy for "best regularly scheduled children/youth program" by the Cleveland Regional Emmy chapter. GAME FORMAT The way the game is played differs from most academic game shows. Lightning Round The first round is the Lightning Round. Ten questions are asked that all are related to a certain subject or category. Each question is worth ten points. Incorrect answers or no answer cost a team ten points. Mix It Up This non-competitive round features six questions that are worth 20 points each. If a team answers all of their questions correctly, they are given a 25-point bonus. Picture Perfect Round The eight questions in this round come with pictures (photos, graphs, tables, etc.) on the monitors. The pictures are part of the question; normally the question will point something out in the picture. Each question is worth ten points. Incorrect answers or no answer cost a team ten points. Hot Picks Each team is asked to pick an envelope that has eight questions, worth 20 points each. The questions in the envelopes are all of the same difficulty level, and each envelope includes a visual math and a visual science question.
