The 2003-04 Detroit Red Wings season was the 78th National Hockey League season in Detroit, Michigan . The Wings once again found themselves having the best regular season record, scoring 109 points.

Trouble was brewing at the goaltender position as the Red Wings began the season. Dominik Hasek decided to return from retirement during the summer, which Detroit didn't mind, but now the Red Wings were sitting on three quality goalies. Starts for each goaltender were limited and anger quickly grew in the locker room. Hasek didn't like sharing the spotlight with Curtis Joseph , even proclaiming Joseph would be better "starting a team somewhere else." Injuries helped solve the problem when first Hasek went down, then Joseph. Manny Legace received the most Red Wing starts and led Detroit into the playoffs. Joseph returned to active duty when Legace struggled against the Nashville Predators in the Quarter-finals and played well, only to be stopped by the Calgary Flames in the semis.

Two Red Wings were named to the roster for the and center Pavel Datsyuk . Lidstrom was voted into his eighth apperance at the all-star game by fans, and Datsyuk was selected to the roster for his first appearance. Perreault, Selanne among all-stars , tsn.ca, September 6, 2007

The Red Wings sold out all 41 home games in 2003-04 as 20,066 fans packed Joe Louis Arena for every regular season and playoff game played in Detroit .
