Häkkinen disqualified from third place after racing under appeal against a fuel irregularity.
The race started from behind the safety car due to adverse weather conditions. This was the first time that a Formula One Grand Prix had started behind the safety car.
Ralf Schumacher started from the pit lane. Due to start 6th he was sent out to take his place on the grid on dry tyres but spun and crashed on his way to the grid.
