In 1985 he began working for Hi-Torque Publications in '' Motocross Action Magazine ''. He was the editor of ''Mountain Bike Action Magazine'' from 1986 to 1993. He then left to become Editor at Rodale's Mountain Bike magazine, which he brought to prominence before being let go in 2004, during a re-structuring which nearly did the magazine in. From there, Espinoza became team director for the Trek Bicycle Corporation TREK/VW mountain bike team, where he is working currently. Zap is known for bringing his own personal style and preferences to all of his writing. In no particular order that included The Clash, a preference for garish bright colored bike clothes that he always attributes to his Mexican heritage, good Mexican food, and a love of motorcycles (particularly Italian Ducatis) that often got him into trouble with those who claimed he wasn't 'pure' enough in his love for MTBs. Those people were wrong to accuse him, though, because Zap's roots in mountain bikes were and remain very deep. Without Espinoza, there is no doubt that mountain bike's social culture would not be what it is today. For years, he typified the modern California mountain biker that we all wanted to be.
