Information About

Yard Duty

Yard Duty, Is a 2D National Freight Yard Simulation, Computer game, using satellite imagery with custom created track work overlayed on top of the image, to create a near realistic network of United States rail yards spanning the country. The game is designed to put the user in the roll of Yardmaster or "YM" in control of an existing rail yard in the U.S. The user can complete tasks such as sorting, loading/unloading, repairing, and mainline running, of trains over the virtual network. Yard Duty is dynamic in that the user can choose to run trains as they are in real life or fictional trains. Yard Duty is primarily based on a multiplayer feature where the user will upload his train to a predetermined FTP server so another user can download that train and move the train on to its destination(s). Yard Duty uses a Yahoo group for users to communicate and share and update files needed to run Yard Duty. Yard Duty's main website for instructions to download and install it are available at its main website: Yard Duty The site is currently undergoing a full makeover. Look for new and exciting features coming to a computer near you SOON!!

Many newcomers to Yard Duty have difficulty understanding the install process. PROTOTYPICAL OPERATIONS

BLOCKING:
When making up a train in a yard, it is customary to arrange the groups of cars (blocks) in station order, with the first 'stations' reached being on the head end of the train. So for instance, say a CSX train is being made up in Barr yard, heading south to FL. The blocking might look like this (from the head end of the train, to the rear end): Cayuga, Haley-Baker, Howell, IN (traffic for central IN could either be included in this block or the Baker block), transfers to NS DeButts yard, Howell, GA (traffic for non FL locations), interchange traffic for NS/FEC at Simpson yard, Uceta.

NEW AND UPCOMING ITEMS

-we will be posting a list of all yards that are manned, and a list of all yards that are unmanned. We would request that you not generate traffic for the unmanned yards at this time.

TIPS AND TRICKS

-If an engine or car becomes elongated (referred to as a "stretchie"), the way to restore it is to
1. isolate the offending car/engine (uncouple from any other cars/engines if possible)
2. make sure it is the selected object
3. hit BYE on control panel, then choose 2nd option (Forget location)
4. the car/engine will then go to your hard drive, from where you can then subsequently ride it back in (should come in exit #1)
