xine (officially pronounced {Link without Title} , like the name "Maxine" without "Ma") is a Multimedia playback engine for Unix-like Operating System s released under the GNU General Public License . It can play CDs , DVD s, and Video CD s, as well as common computer multimedia formats like AVI , WMV , MOV , MP3 , FLAC , Theora , Speex , and Vorbis .

xine is built as a Shared Library (xine-lib) that supports different frontend player applications. To decode multimedia data xine uses libraries from the FFmpeg project or binary Codec s.

A nice feature of xine during playback of videos is the ability to manually correct the synchronization of audio and video if video is ahead of audio or Vice Versa . This is a common problem with recordings on a PC that is too busy to access the recording data or that uses different clocks for audio and video data
(e.g. when recording video from a TV Tuner Card but audio from the Sound Card ). So even ''broken'' recordings that are unbearable to watch in other media players can easily be viewed with xine.
