Women's rights typically refers to the Legal , Social and Human rights of Women . In all Societies , with few exceptions, women have been and continue to be Subjugated . Although significant advances have been made in some parts of the world, in many others women continue to be thought of at best as Children and at worst as mere Chattel belonging to their fathers or husbands. Although by number women constitute a Majority of the population, making them one of the most populous "minorities", they wield disproportionately low political and socioeconomic power. WOMEN'S RIGHTS IN THE WORLD Women's rights in Turkey Turkish Republic was founded in 1923 and the first president of the country, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk , introduced reforms to "raise Turkey to the level of modern civilization". Several of them related to women's rights are summarized below: Turkish Civil Law that canceled men's right to have multiple marriages and gave women the right to get divorced and to have custody was accepted in 1926. Women had the right to vote in 1930 and to be elected in 1934. Women's rights in Iran Cases such as the plight of Nazanin (sentenced to death for an killing in alleged self-defense) are highlighting the human rights issues for women in this country. SEE ALSO
