WISCONSIN VALLEY AND FOOTBALL

The Wisconsin Valley although is a large school division 1 conference, they are largely recognized on the basis of their incredible football success rather than basketball, baseball or volleyball.

Since the WIAA began the state football playoffs 29 years ago in 1976, The Wisconsin Valley has managed to have a team in the state championship 17 times, and a victory in the championship 11 times, more than any other large school conference.

It should also be noted that Wausau (East) High School left the Wisconsin Valley and competed in the Big Rivers Conference for a few years (1960s) before the team today re-joined the Wisconsin Valley.

LAKELAND THUNDERBIRDS

For the past 5 years the Wisconsin Valley has proposed a variety of ways to bring new teams into the conference. The one team in peticular is the Lakeland Thunderbirds, Minoqcua, Wisconsin . Lakeland is a division 1 sized school north of Rhinelander and have dominated the Lumberjack Conference over the past decade with a mix of division 2 and 3 teams.

One heated proposal involved Lakeland joining with a former Valley team, Medford (D2) and a Cloverbelt Conference team, the Mosinee Indians(D2), Mosinee, Wisconsin . The proposal was rejected due to Mosinee and Medfords inability to compete with the larger schools

The proposals have since died in the water in about 2003, but the continued dominance of Lakeland over the smaller schools will no doubt eventually lead to its membership into the conference.
