GEOGRAPHY

According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 98.3 Km&2 (38.0 Mi&2 ). 80.9 km&2 (31.2 mi&2) of it is land and 17.4 km&2 (6.7 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 17.68% water, including Narrows Pond .


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 6,232 people, 2,495 households, and 1,739 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 77.0/km&2 (199.5/mi&2). There were 3,053 housing units at an average density of 37.7/km&2 (97.7/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.43% White , 0.32% Black or African American , 0.32% Native American , 0.40% Asian , 0.03% Pacific Islander , 0.06% from Other Races , and 0.43% from two or more races. 0.53% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 2,495 households out of which 30.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.0% were Married Couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 23.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.85.

In the town the population was spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 26.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 98.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $41,733, and the median income for a family was $47,533. Males had a median income of $33,156 versus $26,667 for females. The Per Capita Income for the town was $19,447. 9.3% of the population and 8.7% of families were below the Poverty Line . 9.6% of those under the age of 18 and 14.0% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
