Deering inherited a woolen mill, but made his fortune with the Deering Harvester Company (International Harvester Company since 1902), which pioneered with a harvesting machine with an automatic binder. This technology made the company world leader in that product niche for some time. He financially supported several institutions of Chicago , the Northwestern University , the Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary , and the Wesley Hospital among them. He was the father of Charles Deering and James Deering . |
