WiktionaryZ is a truly multilingual dictionary based on a relational database.

The first steps towards "WiktionaryZ" date back to August 30 2004 when on the Italian Wiktionary were inserted the first templates for easy. These templates then seved to permit a fast exchange of complete lits of words from one Wiktionary to the other.

In that moment two Wikitionarians , from the Italian and the Dutch Wiktionary started to talk about how to valorise the time spent by all Wikitionarians to the best.
It is clear that coyping and pasting these lists from one Wiktionary to the other also the errors were multiplied and with that the amount of Time necessary to correct them. Furthermore it was not assured that an error corrected on one Wiktionary would have been corrected also on the other.

The logical consequence was to think about inserting this data in a common place. A project with the work name "Ultimate Wiktionary" took its first steps and be December 2004 the basic functionalities were clear: an extension for the Mediawiki software that makes reference to the Wikidata project.

During the following year, when the programming of the software had already started, still many changes to the database design were made and more pecularities of languages like Chinese , Korean , Arabic , Russian and also Sign Language were considered, some of these thanks to various contacts during Wikimania 2005 in Frankfurt .

Different to the actual Wiktionaries, WiktionaryZ will allow for the download of data and for the reuse with other software, like for example software CAT ( Computer Assisted Translation ), dictionary software on the local computer, spellcheckers.

At this stage a prototype including only the data of the GEMET multilingual Thesaurus is online since this ressource is an optimal collection of terminology to test functions with.
