HISTORY


When it was issued to be transformed into a theatre, the playhouse was a 100-year-old barn in an apple orchard in what was then the fringes of Westport. According to the playhouse history statement, written by James McKenzie , the designer Cleon Throckmorton was commissioned to transform the interior of the barn, by then a tanning factory, into a theatre.

In 1931 , the curtain went up on the first production at the Westport Country Playhouse. By 2000 , more than 700 plays had been produced and almost four million people had attended the theatre. Over 75 new works were premiered at Westport and subsequently transferred to Broadway .

The playhouse has been run by Joanne Woodward , wife of Paul Newman , who led a $30.6 million renovation from that tiny little barn, to an amazing new year round theatre facility. Joanne Woodward Will be stepping down from her job as Artistic Director of the Playhouse in January 2006 , and will be followed by ledgendary director Tazwell Thompson .
