HISTORY

Wapato was officially incorporated on September 16 , 1908 .


GEOGRAPHY

Wapato is located at 46°26'44" North, 120°25'19" West (46.445521, -120.421822).

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 2.5 Km&2 (1.0 Mi&2 ). 2.5 km&2 (1.0 mi&2) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census of 2000, there were 4,582 people, 1,198 households, and 971 families residing in the city. The Population Density was 1,823.8/km&2 (4,725.2/mi&2). There were 1,267 housing units at an average density of 504.3/km&2 (1,306.6/mi&2). The racial makeup of the city was 25.51% White , 0.50% African American , 9.34% Native American , 1.53% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 57.57% from Other Races , and 5.54% from two or more races. 76.21% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 1,198 households out of which 53.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.6% were Married Couples living together, 19.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.9% were non-families. 15.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.73 and the average family size was 4.10.

In the city the population was spread out with 38.2% under the age of 18, 12.1% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 14.7% from 45 to 64, and 8.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 25 years. For every 100 females there were 104.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $25,804, and the median income for a family was $26,378. Males had a median income of $18,333 versus $19,375 for females. The Per Capita Income for the city was $9,451. 34.3% of the population and 32.2% of families were below the Poverty Line . 41.6% of those under the age of 18 and 12.7% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
