Anderson dropped out of high school and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps . He served as a Marine from 1961 to 1966, and during his enlistment he earned his Graduate Equivancy Diploma ( GED ). He has been a national spokesman of for the GED. He subsequently earned his college degree and has written four books. Anderson the recepient of the 1994 Horatio Alger Award , which honors individuals who have succeeded in the face of adversity. EXTERNAL LINKS
