Wallace B. Jefferson




He has twice made Texas history. In 2001 , Governor Rick Perry appointed him as the first African American Justice of the Court, and then again in 2004 when he was appointed the first African American Chief Justice by Perry to replace Thomas R. Phillips , who retired after nearly 17 years as Chief Justice. Jefferson's first appointment was to replace Alberto Gonzales , who left to become White House Counsel to President George W. Bush . Wallace was re-elected to that seat in 2002 with 56% of the vote.

Jefferson's term ends December 31, 2006. He is running for a new six-year term.
