The reigning champions Natalie Cook and Kerri Ann Pottharst both had new partners for Athens and coincidentally met at the Last Sixteen Stage where Cook took the honours.

Adriana Behar and Shelda Bede repeated their 2000 Olympic result in taking silver.

QUALIFYING

The 24 competing teams were split equally into six pools of four where each team played the other in a best of three set match.

Two points were awarded to the winner of each match with the loser given a single point.

When all teams played all of their respective pool games the top two from each pool and the four best third placed teams progressed through to the last sixteen knockout stages.
