Virtual Insanity

"Virtual Insanity" is perhaps Jamiroquai 's most well-known ''' Music Video '''. At the MTV Video Music Awards in September 1997, it earned ten nominations, winning four awards, including "Breakthrough Video" and the "Best Video of the Year." It was directed by Jonathan Glazer .

VIDEO DESCRIPTION

The video consists mainly of Jamiroquai's singer, Jay Kay , dancing and performing the song in a bright white room with a grey floor. In the room there are two pieces of furniture, one single and one double couch. (A three seater couch also appears)

The video earned recognition from critics for its special effects: the floor appears to move while the rest of the room stays still, allowing for Kay to perform moves not normally seen in music videos.

At some points the camera rotates down or up and shows the floor or ceiling for a few seconds, and when it returns to the central position, the scene has completely changed.

Other scenes show a crow flying across the room, a cockroach in the floor, the couches bleeding and the other members of Jamiroquai in a corridor being blown away by wind.

A cover of his number one hit "Virtual Insanity" performed by wg feat. Austin Willacy was featured on Konami's Dance Dance Revolution Ultramix 3 for the Xbox

INTERPRETATION

The song is a critique of how scientific achievements undermine the natural order of things and the values of mankind. The sterile setting and feel of the video are meant to represent the soullessness of science and how it detaches itself from human emotion.

The video is meant to surprise and make the viewer question how exactly it was made, which could be compared to how the majority of people respond to scientific achievements, not understanding but remaining in awe.

The blood that spills out on the floor makes for the pieces of furniture is symbolic of the victims of scientific research, specifically animals.

The furniture during the video moves around along with Jay, leading to an interpretation that people and animals are bullied around by the economic interests behind science, without being able to stop it or do anything about it.

HOW IT'S DONE

The room is actually moving; it was a three-wall set on wheels, with the camera in a locked position. At some points, the couches are hooked to the walls so they will move along with the "room", detaching themselves when Jay Kay presses on them.

Minimal editing was done to the video; the crow and the bugs were added in post-production. Footprints left by Jay Kay's sneakers were also digitally removed. The blood that pours from the right wall in the end was originally intended to flow from all the walls, but due to a broken valve it only leaked from the right side.

According to Kay, there was no choreography done for the video; he just "ad libbed" all of his dance maneuvers.
