Information About

Virginia Animation Society

The Virginia Animation Society is a closed society founded in Lynchburg, Virginia on
March 15, 1975. Their purpose is to serve the animation industry and to promote anime in
the United States. The "Virginia" in their name today serves to only indicate their state
of origin as they have now branched out to clubs and campuses all over the continental U.S.
and several European nations. Their closed nature has earned them nicknames such as the
"Anime Mafia" or the "Animasons". This is due to the fact that they do not solicit members,
but encourage those who show an interest in joining.

They have been known to offer scholarships for artistic excellence as well and arrange
internships within the anime industry. In the past, several of their members have gone on to
work in the industry and several industry members still number in their ranks. The membership
of the VAS is expected to adhere to a strict set of rules and guidelines dictating everything
from behavior to dress at conventions. While at conventions, the VAS holds a large private
party for its membership on the next to last day. Nobody outside the VAS knows what these
parties are about since anyone who has ever been to one has been sworn to an oath of secrecy.
