The school is considered a constituent college of both the Virginia Polytechnic Institute And State University (Virginia Tech) and the University Of Maryland, College Park . The main campus of the school is located on Virginia Tech's campus in Blacksburg, Virginia , and it maintains a branch on Maryland's campus in College Park, Maryland . It also has an Equine Center in Leesburg, Virginia . The college's program is designed to be finished in four years. The first three years are spent at the Blacksburg campus. For the final year, most students do clerkships at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Blacksburg, while others are transferred to the branches at College Park or Leesburg.

The school was founded in 1978 . The state of West Virginia , which still does not have a veterinary school, was also offered an opportunity to participate, but declined.
