A video game message board is, as its name implies, a Message Board (also known as a Forum or a Discussion Board ) whose attention is paid largely to Video Game s. They may focus on a specific game, such as '' Super Smash Bros. Melee '', a video game series, such as the Pokémon group of games, a video game system, such as the X-Box , or cover the entire industry as widely as possible. Some of the largest systems of message boards, such as those for GameFAQs , have a board for each level of specificity and have comparatively few games, systems, and concepts yet uncovered. For the most part, a video game message board will also have a section for topics not related to video games. FREQUENT TOPICS IN VIDEO GAME MESSAGE BOARDS In online communities relating to video games, certain subjects are more likely to be found than others. Some of them are natural by-products of a message board dealing with specific things, though some of them seem to be exclusive among video game fans, most of them a source of seemingly-endless controversy and debate. Advice A video game message board is a good place to find advice if a Gamer is unable to progress in any specific video game. More than likely, one simply needs to ask the question, and a forum member will either answer the question or guide the asker to someone or something that can provide the answer. If a video game is widely-known, a popular message board will likely have a topic addressing Frequently Asked Questions . What these questions are about vary tremendously; they will always reflect what kind of questions will be asked the most. For example, a message board about '' Super Mario 64 '', due to a very popular Rumor about Mario 's brother Luigi being in this game (of which he isn't), will invariably be flooded with people asking how to find him. The FAQ set up will then explain that Luigi isn't in this game. If other questions seem to show up every now and then, answers to these questions will be added on as the board continues to grow. Theories Some sites specialize not in how to finish a video game, but rather, they prefer to analyze its contents: Its Game Mechanic s, its plot, its characters, and its role in other related games. Theories proposed by the people in these message boards are predominantly Conjecture . Theory-based sites are characterized by Krypto-revisionism and Fanon . GameHiker is a website devoted to gathering details about the . Protests/Petitions People may gather to these message boards to get ideas and proposals through to people who may potentially agree and thus form an '' EarthBound '', had sent a massive Petition urging Nintendo to produce a Sequel , '' EarthBound 2 '', promised during the former's End Credits . Possibly due to this petition, the workers on the original game are back at work, and the game is due to release in April of 2006 . Whether the game will be released outside of Japan or not is questionable. System wars Since the early 1990s , people with strong company loyalty will often argue against people who are loyal to one or some of its competitors. One side will adamantly say that his or her company is superior; the other will counterattack by refuting the argument and Asserting the other company is superior. Obviously, these arguments have little to no impact on the companies themselves. People who actively participate in them are sometimes derogatorily called Fanboy s (or fangirls). While arguments among specific games do exist, argments between companies in direct conflict with one another are predominant. The first major "system war" was between the Super Nintendo and the Sega Genesis (also known as the Mega Drive ). In this system war, people who backed Nintendo would accuse Sega 's machine of being technologically inferior, and supporters for Sega would criticize Nintendo's censorship policies. This war would end upon the release of the Sega Saturn . When Sony released the PlayStation , a lot of people flocked to support it. The argument moved to Sega vs. Sony, and Nintendo dropped out. Both systems were functionally similar, and both sides stated that the other is technologically inferior. The PlayStation was developed later and can process more smoothly, whereas the Saturn, it claimed, was better because it had three Processor s, the PlayStation having one. The s. However, a Nintendo64 game is much harder to damage and almost completely lacks loading time. Currently, the system wars are between the PlayStation 2 , the Nintendo Gamecube , and the X-Box . (The XBox 360 has been released, but it hasn't ad many games released for it yet, and because of its relatively new age, it's substantially more powerful than any other system as of February 2006 and isn't considered in these three systems' league.) The X-Box is argued for its high processing power and its online service; the PlayStation 2 is argued for its high amount of popular games, and the Gamecube is argued for its small size, low price, and established Nintendo Franchise s. The N-Gage and Gizmondo are not generally considered significant and are rarely argued for or against. Mischief Some boards have a community of troublemakers who have lost their concern about any video game and just band together to wreak havoc on whatever they can find. The most infamous of these is LUE , which is infamous for its repeated Forum Invasion s and incredibly high isolation from any other board on GameFAQs. They carry a trademark known as LUEshi . Past targets include other GameFAQs boards, Neopets , and possibly Wikipedia's entry for '' Mario Kart DS ''. CNET In 2003 , CNET bought GameFAQs and, in an interesting move, merged its message boards with those of GameSpot (which it had already acquired in 2000 ). Shortly after the merge, users from GameSpot had a few advantages over the GameFAQs users, such as editing previous posts they had made, which the GameSpot users exploited to their fullest, going as far as to expelling GameFAQs members from the sites themselves. In addition, the look of the boards had radically changed, causing disappointment on both sides. Since then, CNET has integrated the message boards of TV.com and MP3.com , making it one of the largest message board systems on the internet, rivaling that of IGN .
