Unlike previous Paradox Games, which either focused on exploration and colonization ( Europa Universalis ) or warfare ( Hearts Of Iron ), Victoria focuses itself in internal management, covering the industrialization and social/political changes in a country. The game itself gives a lot of importance to the economy of a country, having a complex market system which is described as being one of the best economic simulators ever made. Fans of Paradox's games have noted this one for being the deepest game Paradox has yet made, making it quite popular with the Paradox fanbase. However, ''Victoria'' received largely indifferent reviews on release, averaging only 60.4% on Gamerankings . Critics cited reasons such as the game's steep learning curve and its relatively dated graphics. GAME MECHANICS Victory conditions The main goal is to end the game with most Victory Points. To get victory points, you must score in 3 categories:
The combined score of the above 3 categories determine the 'winner' of the game. However, in a normal game, only a few countries have the capacity to become the winner as defined by the victory conditions. These countries are usually highly advanced European countries with large stretches of land, like Great Britain , France , Prussia / Germany , Russia , United States or China (an exception). Thus, many players who prefer playing second-tier countries like Brazil , Netherlands or Japan set their own goals for the game, such as dominating South America for Brazil or defeating Belgium for Netherlands. Economy The economy system in Victoria is highly complicated, with a world market and a flow of resources. Every province in the game provides a resource. Some resources, such as wheat, can be used immediately. Other materials, such as coal, can be sold in their raw form or processed to make other materials (coal-to-steel). It gives the gameplayer a wide range of options in which to build their economy, provided they have access to the raw materials. Of course these can also be bought on the world market, but access to them is granted based on a country's prestige rating. Industrialisation The game focuses on industrialisation in a country, which is driven by technological research. The Machine parts are the currency for industrialisation, and is needed for many industrial-related actions such as building factories and improving railroads (in the highly popular VIP mod). Warfare Warfare in Victoria is abstract, and consists of divisions marching to hostile territory and fighting a hands-off battle that the player has no control over save by sending reinforcements or withdrawing. Combat efficiency, however, can be influenced decisively by the player. Appointing generals or admirals, respectively, influences the morale and organisation of the troops, as do technological improvements. An advanced railroad system in a province grants said province's owner boni in combat, aside from the obvious advantage of increased mobility. Provinces can also be fortified and troops will entrench when left alone long enough, both giving enormous combat benefits. EXTERNAL LINKS
