Victoria's Requiem

VICTORIA'S REQUIEM;

Composer- Tomas Luis De Victoria

This setting was composed as the requiem mass of Empress Maria sister of Philip II of Spain , circa, 1603 . It is mostly scored for SSATTB using sections of the traditional mass chant to connect wide sections of polyphony. Unlike many of his contemporaries, but characteristic of Victoria's style, the ''Requiem'' uses little imitation and remains homophonic and simple, with countrapuntal phrase sparingly dispersed. Victoria used both major and minor Modes for this Mass . One of his most revered works, Victoria's Requiem is beautifully melancholy and is a striking example of the composer's trademark ability to brilliantly create profoundly emotional music, using simple elements. It is interesting to note that Victoria was employed as personal chaplain to the Empress Maria, from 1586 to the time of her death in 1603.
