Venezuelan Presidential Election, 2006

The Bolivarian Republic Of Venezuela is to hold a presidential election in December 2006 . A new President will be elected for a six-year term. As directed by the National Electoral Council (CNE), the elections will be held on Sunday, 3 December 2006 .

DECLARED CANDIDATES

Teodoro Petkoff . Though Petkoff began his political life as a Communist , he gravitated towards Liberalism in the 1990s . Petkoff was a Member Of Congress and twice the Presidential candidate for the Movement Towards Socialism ; he later directed economic policy in the second government of Rafael Caldera , over-seeing a programme of Privatisation s and large cuts in public spending. He left politics in 1998 , becoming a journalist with '' El Mundo '' and then proprietor and editor of '' Tal Cual ''. In his journalism, Petkoff has been an out-spoken critic of President Hugo Chávez and his supporters, but has also criticised supporters of the 2002 Coup Attempt Against Chávez . Petkoff is currently running as an independent candidate, without a party base, but may win the endorsement of parties as the campaign progresses.
