Upper Crust

The upper crust of a pie is the higher part of a pie or loaf of bread that reputadely has the best taste - usually because the bottom may be burnt when cooked in medieval times - hence the phrase upper crust for gentry who, in a country household, would get the upper crust of a pie/loaf whilst the servants would have the rest of the pie/loaf.
