It is exclusively mandated to hold individuals indicted for, or suspected of, having committed war crimes by the International Criminal Tribunal For Rwanda (ICTR). As such it is also sometimes referred to as the ICTR Detention Unit. At present, 51 people transferred in from more than 15 countries are confined there. They include the former Rwandan Army Chief of Staff Augustin Bizimungu and the pop singer Simon Bikindi {Link without Title} The welfare of these inmates is monitored by the International Committee Of The Red Cross (ICRC). |
