Union Institute and University provides non-traditional education at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral level. Begun as a Consortium of universities in 1964 called '''The Union for Research and Experimentation in Higher Education''', it later became an independent degree-granting institution calling itself '''The University Without Walls''' ( 1971 ), and then '''The Union Institute''' ( 1989 ). After acquiring Vermont College in 2001 , it was renamed Union Institute & University.
