Union Badge Of Norway And Sweden

Norway and Sweden were in a union from 1814 to 1905 . In 1844 the governmnets of both countries decided that their flags should reflect the status of union. So the Union Badge was invented and placed in the canton of each flag. This was at first popular in Norway as it was seen as a sign of Norway's equal status in the union. In Sweden it was alway seen by some people as a desecration of the flag. As the union grew more unpopular in Norway the badge was also seen this way in Norway. It came to be popularily know as the "herring sallad" in both countries.

In 1898 Norway's parlament abolished the badge from the national (merchant) flag and the state flag. It was kept in the war flag and naval ensign. The "pure" Norwegian flag was hoisted again in 1899. It was to remain in all the Swedish flags and the state and war flag of Norway until 1905.

The union badge on its own was used as the Naval Jack in both countries, and was sometimes used by delagations to foreign countries who were negotiation on behalf of both countries.

One should also note that the blue in the union badge would be the same as in the rest of the flag.
