Union, New York




The Town of Union is in the south-central part of the county, west of Binghamton, New York . The communities of Union form the western Suburb s of Binghamton. Two communities, Johnson City and Endicott, along with Binghamton, make up the "Triple Cities."


HISTORY

The region was first settled around 1782.
The Town of Union was established in 1791 , before the creation of Broome County. The town later reduced in size by the formation of other towns, the first being the Town Of Owego (Then the "Town of Tioga") in 1800.


GEOGRAPHY

According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 92.8 Km&2 (35.8 Mi&2 ). 91.1 km&2 (35.2 mi&2) of it is land and 1.7 km&2 (0.7 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 1.87% water.

Union is on the north side of the Susquehanna River . New York Route 17 crosses from the north to the south side of the Susquehanna in Union.


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 56,298 people, 24,538 households, and 14,551 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 618.0/km&2 (1,600.8/mi&2). There were 26,507 housing units at an average density of 291.0/km&2 (753.7/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 92.72% White , 2.45% African American , 0.17% Native American , 2.68% Asian , 0.03% Pacific Islander , 0.58% from Other Races , and 1.38% from two or more races. 1.53% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 24,538 households out of which 26.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.0% were Married Couples living together, 10.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.7% were non-families. 34.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was 2.90.

In the town the population was spread out with 21.9% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 18.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 90.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $34,101, and the median income for a family was $46,170. Males had a median income of $35,891 versus $24,120 for females. The Per Capita Income for the town was $20,077. 11.3% of the population and 8.3% of families were below the Poverty Line . 16.4% of those under the age of 18 and 6.0% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.


COMMUNITIES AND LOCATIONS IN UNION

  • Choconut Center -- A Hamlet in the northeast part of the town.

  • Endicott -- The Village of Endicott.

  • Endwell -- A hamlet next to Endicott. It was formerly known as "Hooper."

  • Johnson City -- The Village of Johnson City is adjacent to the City of Binghamton.

  • Union Center -- A hamlet by the north town line.

  • West Corners -- A hamlet northwest of Endicott.
